How to Replace The Key Fob Battery in the Volvo XC40, XC90, and S60

How to Replace the Key Fob Battery in the Volvo XC40, XC90, and S60

One morning you walk up to your Volvo and the doors don’t unlock right away. Maybe the key works, but only when you stand close to the car. That’s often a sign the battery in the key fob is running low. If you drive a Volvo XC40XC90, or S60, replacing the key fob battery is easier than you think. It just takes a few minutes, and you don’t need special tools. Let’s walk through it step by step.

Know When It’s Time for a New Battery

Most drivers notice a change in how far the key works from the vehicle. You may also see a message in the dash that says the car key battery is low. If that pops up, it’s time to act. The key fob still works when the battery is weak, but waiting too long could leave you locked out.

Get the Right Battery Before You Begin

For all three Volvo models, the key fob takes a CR2032, 3V battery. It’s a small round coin-style battery that’s easy to find. Just make sure to choose a good quality one. Avoid touching the flat surfaces of the new battery with your fingers. That can affect how well it works.

Open the Key Shell Gently

Hold the key with the Volvo logo facing up and the key ring towards you. There’s a small sliding catch near the key ring. Slide it to the side and remove the front shell. Underneath, you’ll find a second catch. Slide this to release the back shell. Lift both pieces gently to avoid snapping the edges.

Change the Battery the Right Way

Once you’ve removed the outer casing, you’ll see the battery cover. Turn it counterclockwise to open it. A coin or flat screwdriver can help here. Lift the cover off and take out the old battery. Put the new one in with the positive side facing up. Make sure it fits snugly under the clips.

Close Everything Back in Place

Now, press the battery cover back on and twist it clockwise to close. Fit the back shell first, pressing until it clicks. Then slide it back into place. Repeat with the front shell. Once everything feels secure, your key is ready to go again. Make sure there are no gaps in the shell and that all clicks were heard.

What If You’re Using a Key Tag?

Volvo also offers a Key Tag with some models. This smaller, compact key doesn’t use a replaceable battery. When it stops working, you’ll need to get a new one from a Volvo retailer. If the old one is completely dead, hand it in so it can be removed from your vehicle’s system.
