Nearly two-thirds of Canadians considering an EV as their next purchase

Canadians have electrification on their mind. According to the latest 2024 Mobility Trend Report by Volvo, nearly two-thirds (64%) of Canadians plan to buy an electric vehicle within the next five years, be it hybrid, plug-in hybrid, or fully electric.

While the majority of Canadians feeling positive about EV ownership, those who remained wary shed light on their hesitation, including concerns about range and a lack of charging stations. Another 38% say that they’d consider an EV if there were better government rebates or incentives available.

For Volvo, addressing these concerns is a must in order to make a difference in consumer willingness to switch to an EV and support a greener future.

We’ve been hard at work. Last year Volvo announced a partnership with the North American Charging System, which will roll out this year and alleviate charging infrastructure concerns by making 12,000 of Tesla’s fast-charge Supercharger points available to Volvo drivers.

Designing different sized EVs that match different lifestyles is also important to meet consumer needs. The EX30 is the perfect example. It’s our most compact and affordable electric SUV to date with the smallest CO2 footprint of any Volvo car. You can explore the entire EX30 line-up here.

“Understanding that early adopters have already transitioned to electric vehicles, we’re focusing on the broader base of potential EV owners who are deterred by cost and infrastructure concerns,” said Matt Girgis, Managing Director at Volvo Car Canada. “With the EX30, we offer a gateway to electrified mobility, combined with the advanced safety technology that Volvo is known for.”

The report also highlights demographic trends, showing that those most likely to consider hybrid or fully electric vehicles are from British Columbia (74%) and between the ages of 18 and 34 (76%).

“The launch of the EX30 is a significant milestone for Volvo Car Canada,” added Girgis. “Our record-high EV sales reflect a successful alignment with consumer demand and environmental responsibility. For those not yet ready to fully transition, our range of plug-in hybrid vehicles provides a flexible alternative.”

Volvo’s leadership in electrification is clear. Half of our sales nation-wide in March were EVs and we remain dedicated to our sustainability goals, focusing on driver needs and collaborating with industry stakeholders to enhance the EV ecosystem from coast to coast in Canada.
