Introducing the Volvo EX90: Everything you need to know about the all-new electric SUV from Volvo
Volvo has set aggressive environmental targets by promising to sell only fully electric vehicles by 2030. The all-new EX90 flagship SUV marks a step closer to that reality.
“The Volvo EX90 is the start of something new for Volvo Cars in many ways,” says Jim Rowan, Volvo Cars CEO.
The Volvo EX90, an all-electric evolution of the XC90, is a three-row midsize SUV that comfortably seats seven passengers with safety at the forefront of its eye-catching design. It’s the first time Volvo has purposely built a platform for an electric vehicle and as such, the EX90 has a higher safety rating than any of its predecessors.
Think of it as “a highly advanced computer on wheels.”
Safety and Features
State-of-the-art sensors, including cameras, radars, and lidar, which senses the road ahead and detects obstructions or hazards hundreds of yards in advance, work together as an “invisible shield of safety” both inside and outside of the vehicle. The core computers are built on in-house software and can create a seamless 360 degree view of the car and its surroundings at any given moment.
Inside, the electrified SUV has been equipped with technology that uses an in-house algorithm that can understand the driver’s gaze and concentration level. The interior sensors and cameras are able to detect when the driver is getting drowsy or has become downright distracted and then sends prompts in the form of haptic nudges that become more persistent if ignored. The EX90 has the ability to safely bring itself to a stop and call for help in a true emergency situation. It’s the first-ever Volvo that has the hardware needed to support autonomous driving—in the future, of course.
The EX90 has also been outfitted with Volvo’s trusty Pilot Assist functionality, which has revamped steering support during lane changes. Other tech features include a 14.5-inch infotainment screen with built-in Google products, including navigation tools like Google Maps, speakers integrated into the headrests for optimal sound, and phone key technology, which uses the driver’s smartphone as a car key to unlock and start it as the person with the appointed smartphone approaches.
Performance
Electric vehicles continue to gain both power and range. The EX90 can achieve 480 kilometres of driving on a single full charge. It’s quick to charge, too, going from 10 to 80 percent in just under half an hour.
The EX90 is four-wheel drive and powered by a 111kWh battery and two permanent magnet electric motors which deliver 402 horsepower and 568 lb-ft of torque in the standard model and 496 horsepower and 671 lb-ft in the performance model for an estimated acceleration of 60 mph in 5.7 seconds for the standard (4.7 seconds for the performance).
The battery is also set up to support bi-directional charging, which means you can use it to supply energy to another entity, like a different electric Volvo or even a home. This bit of tech won’t be rolled out initially with the EX90, but it’s baked into the software and is there and ready for when the switch is flipped. It’s another first for Volvo.
Design
Volvo’s Scandinavian roots shine through in the EX90 as it draws plenty of similarities to the existing XC90. Its overall silhouette is as sleek and modern with door handles and window glass that are flush to the body. The grilleless frontend adds to the futuristic aesthetic without being too over-the-top. Expect a 117.5-inch wheelbase on the EX90, also similar to the XC90.
“The Volvo EX90 is a statement for where we are, and where we are going,” says Rowan, adding that the it has been thoughtfully “designed to further raise our safety standards, the first Volvo car to be truly defined by its software and part of a wider ecosystem, connecting to your home and your other devices.”
Expected delivery dates for the EX90 is 2024 and all models we’ll receive in Canada will be built at the Volvo plant south of the border in South Carolina. For more information on the EX90, contact Volvo Cars Waterloo today.
