Electric Volvo drivers will soon be able to use Tesla’s Supercharger network
As our pursuit for a fully electric fleet continues so does the demand for accessible places to charge. This summer, we’ve inked a revolutionary partnership with Tesla to make EV ownership even more appealing. As of 2025 all new Volvo electric vehicles will be built with the North American Charging Standard (NACS) charging port, giving Volvo driver’s access to all of Tesla’s Supercharger network. It’s the first time that a European automaker has partnered with Tesla.
This partnership will provide an additional 12,000 fast-charge points across Canada, the United States and Mexico, in addition to the tens of thousands of stations currently available. Further, the Supercharger is forecasted to grow and its development will continue to create even more charging points for Volvo drivers as time goes on.
“As part of our journey to becoming fully electric by 2030, we want to make life with an electric car as easy as possible,” says Jim Rowan, CEO at Volvo Cars. “One major inhibitor to more people making the shift to electric driving – a key step in making transportation more sustainable – is access to easy and convenient charging infrastructure. Today, with this agreement, we’re taking a major step to remove this threshold for Volvo drivers in the United States, Canada and Mexico.”
If you currently own a fully electric Volvo, like a XC40 or a C40 Recharge, don’t worry—you won’t be left behind. There’s an adapter coming in the first half of 2024 that will allow you to take advantage of the Tesla Supercharger network, too.
Of course, our customer’s personal preference is important to us. Future Volvo EV drivers that buy a new vehicle with the NACS charge port will have the option to continue to use the former Combined Charging System (CCS), which will be made possible with an adapter.
In-app experience will also support the Tesla’s Supercharger network
The Volvo Cars app will be updated to support the new Tesla Supercharger network access, and drivers will have the ability to search the thousands of public charging stations and see real-time details on charger availability of chargers, and even pay for their chargins session in the app. It’s an effort that aims to make Volvo EV ownership as comfortable and seamless as possible.
