Exploring local food and arts through farmers’ markets is a delightful way to spend a weekend and stretch your Volvo’s legs. Around the Kitchener-Waterloo area, several markets not only offer fresh produce but also provide a taste of the community’s vibrant culture and local makers.

 

At Volvo Cars Waterloo, we love exploring our community, which is why we’ve put together a guide to five of the best farmer’ markets within driving distance from Kitchener-Waterloo, complete with market highlights.

 

Elmira Farmers’ Market – Elmira, Ontario

Getting there: Take Highway 85 north for about 30 minutes.
 
Elmira’s market is small, but mighty, cherished for its intimate feel and high-quality goods. It’s the place to go for fresh-out-of-the-oven bakery items, local cheeses, and craft drinks. In the spring, the market coincides with the Elmira Maple Syrup Festival, which is a major local event attracting visitors from all over the province.
 
The farmers’ market runs every Saturday, May to October in the The Mercantile at the Crossroads gift shop parking lot at 384 Arthur St South.
 

St. Jacobs Farmers’ Market – St. Jacobs, Ontario

Getting there: Take King Street N out of Waterloo and follow the signs to St. Jacobs, a scenic 20-minute drive.
 
Must-do: As Canada’s largest year-round farmers’ markets, St. Jacobs offers a multitude of vendors selling everything from local fruits and vegetables to cured meats, fish, artisan cheeses and handmade gifts. Don’t miss the churros. If you stop by on a Thursday, you might have the chance to see the livestock auction in action.
 

Stratford Farmers’ Market – Stratford, Ontario

Getting there: Take the 45 minute journey along Highway 8 through the quaint village of Shakespeare into Stratford.
 
The Stratford Farmers’ Market, which expands outdoors at the Stratford Rotary Complex every Saturday, May through October, is a hub for local produce and artisan goods. Known for its quality meats and organic vegetables, the market also features a variety of homemade pies and pastries. Visitors can enjoy seasonal specialities and partake in cooking demonstrations by local chefs, making it a food lover’s paradise.
 
For 2024, a special Sunday’s market in Market Square will run from May 5 until October 20 from 10-2pm.

 

Guelph Farmers’ Market – Guelph, Ontario

 
Getting there: Head east on Highway 7 for about 25 minutes.
 
Known for its friendly atmosphere and strong community vibe, the Guelph Farmers’ Market is a favorite among locals. Here, you can find fresh grown produce, international cuisines, and unique crafts. The market is a great place to try local honey and freshly baked goods while enjoying live music performances by local talent.
 

Cambridge Farmers’ Market – Cambridge, Ontario

Getting there: A quick drive south on Highway 8, approximately 20 minutes.
 
Operating since 1830, Cambridge Farmers’ Market is one of the oldest markets in Canada. It boasts a wide range of local and organic produce, meats, and handmade products. Be sure to check out the seasonal offerings and the homemade preserves. The market also features activities for children, making it perfect for family outings.
